Hampton Roads Sunfish Challenge & Dinghy
Distance Race

It all started back in
2009 when 2 PBC members, Jonathan Romero and Jimmy Schools, took
their old 1970's era sunfish sailboats out to Willoughby for a
friendly relaxing sail. They were having a blast and really had no
intention to race but you know the rule...When you have at least 2
boats sailing, you have a race!
Well, this lead to a friendly little discussion about who's boat was
faster. This eventually escalated to someone saying "I bet I can
kick your butt in my boat"! I'm not sure who may have said that
first ... but that lead to the creation of the 2009 Hampton Roads
Sunfish Challenge & Dinghy
Distance Race!
In
2010 these same PBC members persuaded the Portsmouth Boat Club (PBC)
to help sponsor the race. As usual, PBC answered the call and the
2nd Annual Hampton Roads Sunfish Challenge Dinghy Distance Race
became a reality. We anticipate the event will become highly
successful and continue for years to come.
This event also includes racing for
other dinghy type sailboats in an open class which is handicapped
and scored on the Portsmouth Rating System. The race course starts
at the Willoughby Boat Ramp, continues up the Elizabeth River and
finishes at the Old Dominion University Sailing Center. An after
race party for skippers, crews and race sponsors is held to
celebrate the race event. Awards are presented at an Awards
Ceremony during the party. Come join in the fun.
